A Buyer's Guide To Pet Health Insurance

By: Nicholas Hunt

Pet medical insurance can be a lifesaver when your pet becomes ill or has an accident, as it will help you to pay the frequently hugely expensive fees that veterinary surgeons charge to make your pet healthy again. Without the financial help that pet insurance cover can provide, you may be faced with the unhappy choice of having your pet put to sleep rather than letting it continue living in misery.

With this in mind, increasing numbers of people are determining that this relatively rare type of insurance is a worthwhile precaution. But how can you decide which of the dozens or even hundreds of policies on the market is a good choice for you? Here are a few things that you should definitely take into consideration.

Firstly, is the policy suitable for your pet? Most policies have specific exceptions that could make them wholly unsuitable for your situation. For example, particular breeds of animal that are vulnerable to costly conditions might be debarred from coverage. Another example is that most policies have an upper limit on the age of the pet to be covered. If you don't closely review the insurance documents for these limitations, you could well discover that any claim you have to make in the future is refused.

Secondly, decide how much you can afford to pay for your pet insurance. Clearly, in general, the less you pay the less benefits you will be provided with. The flipside of this is that if you spend more you might end up being charged for benefits you are not likely to want or ever claim for. Even so, insurance prices can vary widely even for products offering much the same set of features, so it's worth shopping around and using price comparison sites to get the sweetest deal. Always bear in mind though that product comparison sites don't ordinarily feature offers from every insurer on the market, so it can often be worthwhile to do some research of your own too.

Finally, take a look around on the internet for reviews supplied by other customers. This will help you make up your mind whether the policy is worth considering. There are two points to keep in mind here though. Discontented people are more apt to post reviews than people who are happy, so you could get a false impression by only reading critiques posted by unhappy customers. Second, glowing reviews can sometimes have a surreptitious purpose: they could have been written by the insurers themselves, for example, or they could even have been written by an intermediary with the aim of earning a commission by convincing you to buy. Nonetheless, you can get an overall idea of the value of a product by reading a wide range of information across many different internet sites.
