BlackBerry RIM 7100i

The BlackBerry RIM 7100i is an aging BlackBerry smartphone from Research in Motion that was released in 2005. It is what looks to be the ugly duckling of the BlackBerry 7100 series. It has a different, less cutting EDGE shape, and uses an old network that very few other phones use today. Unfortunately, this makes the BlackBerry RIM 7100i the only BlackBerry 7100 series phone that you should not consider using as a backup device.

The BlackBerry RIM 7100i is designed to work on the iDEN network, so don’t expect to be able to use this phone anywhere other than a few places in the world today. On the positive side, the use of the iDEN network allows for somewhat fast data transfer rates where you have a signal.

Measuring in at approximately five inches by two and a half inches by one inch, the BlackBerry RIM 7100i is a large phone but not so big that you can’t carry it all day. Keeping with the older BlackBerry tradition, the BlackBerry RIM 7100i is rather heavy and weighs 145 grams. This is 20 grams more than the other 7100 series phones.

The BlackBerry RIM 7100i also has the worst battery life of any of the BlackBerry 7100 series phones. Expect to get less than three hours of talk time or 90 hours of standby time on a single charge. This battery life is likely one of the worst of any phone in the 2005 era.

Despite the different outward appearance, the BlackBerry RIM 7100i sports the same large, 240 by 260 pixel, screen that is capable of displaying 65k colors.

Other features found on the BlackBerry RIM 7100i include a full QWERTY keyboard, WAP internet, USB connectivity, Bluetooth support, push to talk functions, a large phone book, alarm, calendar, speakerphone, calculator, email support, to-do list, and memo pad.

- Ugly in comparison to the other 7100 series phones
- Only supports an aging/dead network

Overall

The BlackBerry RIM 7100i is the 7100 series phone to avoid. It is uglier than the rest. It uses a network that may not be around much longer. And it offers nothing in the way of battery life. If you are considering the purchase of a backup BlackBerry device, go with one of the other BlackBerry 7100 series phones instead.
