Combating the Environmental Damage of Storing Wine

By: Musa Aykac

Environmental issues are a big deal for a lot of wine lovers out there. Some like to choose wine that has been locally sourced so that it doesn't have to be transported long distances, which would increase its carbon footprint. Others take the issue a lot further and only buy wine that has been made from vineyards that do not use pesticides, buy their wine in light and recycled carbon containers, and drink their wine from recycled glassware. What most wine drinkers don't realize however is the impact on the environment that actually storing wine has, which is something that a Californian company has decided to do something about.

If you are lucky enough to have a large wine cellar then you might not be damaging the environment as much, but unfortunately most people do not, and have to rely on a wine cooler or fridges to keep their bottles preserved. These devises can use vast amounts of energy when they are operational, and they are often kept on 24hrs a day. Furthermore, they are very difficult to destroy and need to be broken down in a process which not only causes carbon to be released into the atmosphere, but also contributes towards landfill space. Even those who do have cellars frequently have to run dehumidifiers in them to keep the moisture levels correct and their wine preserved. However, now there is another option for wine lovers.

A Californian wine-accessories company have designed a chiller than uses no energy at all. It works by using a series of pipes that are planted deep under the earth. These pipes contain water that is slowly circulated using a solar powered motor. The earth around the deep pipes absorbs any heat from the water and chills it.

When this water returns to the above-ground fridge it takes any heat out of the compartment containing the wine and sends it back down into the ground for chilling. Giving you a nice cool bottle without harming the planet. The company plan to sell the device around California first, before taking it to the national and maybe international markets. They have even been given a grant by the charity "Save Our Planet" to look at developing a whole new range of devices based on the same technology. They have also been commended by the State of California for their entrepreneurialism and their efforts towards reducing energy consumption.
