Discus Fish Care - Keeping and Taking Care Of Your Discus Fish

The Discus fish is one of the popular aquarium fishes that have been taken as pets by hobbyist and those who enjoy the sight of these colorful fishes in the fish tanks. Although these are beautiful fishes, proper care is always important to make them grow healthy and happy even if they are not in their natural habitat, thus you need to learn Discus fish care tips and techniques to make them feel they are still in their habitat.

If you are one of those attracted by the beauty of this fish and you want to add them to your aquarium, here are some of the important tips to help you master Discus fish care.

- Understand the behavior of the Discus Fish. The young Discus can be aggressive when it comes to eating but as they mature, their eating behaviors change. They also learn to become more graceful as they mature. A basic Discus fish care tip to keep in mind is that, they live in groups in their natural habitat, thus you should also try to give the fish a number of companion. It is advisable to have a group of six or more Discus to prevent them from getting lonely in your aquarium and prevent them from being aggressive to their own kind. The Discus is also a shy fish, thus it is important to put some ornaments and plants in your aquarium to give the fishes a place to hide. They are also sensitive to noise thus, you may not want to put them in the office or in places where there are noise and distraction.

- Understand their specific needs. Another basic thing to consider in Discus fish care is their need of clean water and good nutrition. As a freshwater fish, the Discus likes water free from chemicals. Chlorinated tap water may need to be dechlorinated. You should also follow a regular schedule of changing the water in their fish tank to keep it clean. In terms of feeding, you should not also overfeed them. A good diet for your fish promotes their healthy growth and great color development and this may include Omega One, brine shrimp and other nutritious food.

- Make sure you are giving them an environment as close as possible to their natural habitat. The temperature should be as warm as their natural habitat. If you are keeping them in your aquarium for display, the ideal temperature falls from 27.5 to 29 degrees Celsius. Do not also put them in a bare tank, nor alone with other types of fish, but also give them a large aquarium enough for them to swim freely.

- Put them in with healthy tank mates. If you are choosing healthy Discus to put into your aquarium, make sure also to properly select their tank mates. Make sure that these other species of fish will not transfer diseases to your Discus nor bully them.

Before any attempt to bring in Discus to your home, always be responsible and make sure that you really know how to take care of them and you know the basics of Discus fish care. With this, you will be ensured that you can have your fish with you for a longer time.
