Drink Driving: Significant Effects On Your Car Insurance

By: Eric Token

Being caught driving after drinking can result in you being convicted of the offense known as Driving under the Influence or DUI. This offense will definitely affect your automobile insurance. The immediate effects of having a record for drink driving would be an increase in your insurance premium. Further consequences on your insurance may include cancellation of your insurance plan once it reaches its expiration date. If you have no insurance policy prior to being caught in a drink driving situation, you will have difficulty in getting a cover for your vehicle in the future.

Once you have been convicted of drink driving, the authorities will require you to file a statement that will prove that your vehicle has the adequate insurance policy to cover for the damages and legal issues involved in the incident. Once the document has been filed, the licenses under suspension would be effectively returned to you. In most jurisdictions in the UK, drivers are required to file this statement to the local authorities handling the licensing of motor vehicles. You can find several insurance companies that can provide you insurance for high-risk drivers, but do not expect that all insurance providers would continuously provide you the coverage if you were involved in multiple drunk-driving incidents. Most insurance companies would immediately cancel the policy after its expiration if they assess that you are prone to road accidents.

When being involved in a car accident because you have been under the influence of alcohol, you may want to consider not filing the statement indicating that your vehicle is covered by an insurance policy. With the number of road cases happening each day, there are certain chances that you can get out of the situation without having to add the information to your driving record. However, some insurance providers may impose strict measures to identify if you have been previously caught driving under the influence. Although there are chances that you can get away the first time you apply for insurance, expect your insurance premium to increase once they found out about these incidents.

A DUI conviction would significantly affect your chances of getting insurance but it can be much easier to get one if you are already insured the moment the accident happens. In most cases, car owners wait for their insurance to expire before getting another insurance quote from their provider. If your insurance policy has been cancelled after the incident, expect that they have already accounted for the conviction. Therefore, you should immediately find another insurance firm that can provide you coverage as soon as possible while the incident is not yet filed on the records of the authorities. You may want to consider going for small insurance providers or large insurance companies that do not investigate too much their client's background.

Although a DUI conviction may affect your ability to get insurance and the cost of your premiums, you would never run out of choices with the number of insurance companies available on the Internet. You may need to research further on packages provided by different insurance firms in order for you to get adequate coverage you need.
