Easy Ways To Care For Your Fingernails

By: Art Gib

I looked at my fingernails this morning--one of my former more attractive physical traits--and I was not amused to find them brittle, thin, and even cracked in some places. It was only a little while longer before I found a grizzly hangnail. Yikes!

What is particularly sad about the state of my fingernails is that it really doesn't take too much effort to make sure that you get healthy, natural, beautiful nails! If you find yourself in the same position, then let me allow you to share some tips so that you and I both can get our fingernails back into the condition that attracts attention and make you feel more confident.

First of all--and this one is common sense, but you just never know sometimes--make sure to eat well. Proper nutrition, including vitamins and minerals, will ensure that your fingernails have the vital ingredients to be strong.

Of course, if you start supplementing your diet with a multivitamin (make sure you get one that includes the major minerals, too), you will notice tons of other benefits, too, so don't hesitate!

When you're doing heavy labor or even just regular household chores, try to protect your hands--and your nails--wear gloves, even if they're just rubber, plastic, or latex gloves. You can easily get a box of plastic gloves, as those worn in food service for cheap.

Protecting your hands can help from banging, bruising, or hitting the nail, which ends up causing those unsightly white spots which people sometimes mistake for being a calcium or zinc deficiency. It can actually take up to eight months for your nails to grow enough for these "smudges," to disappear, so be careful!

If you are hoping to grow out your nails (which is not necessary to make them attractive--long nails actually freak some guys out), try using a highly-rated nail hardening solution. Yes, they really do work.

There are some polishes which also act as hardeners, so if you paint your nails often or go in to a local spa or salon to get a manicure, bring these special double-duty polishes to help you along.

If you are the type to, in fact, get manicures, then you should try to avoid fake nails, as they weaken your nails and strip away the nutrients from the top layer. Definitely no good!

I know it's temptingly convenient to use your fingernails as tools--to open cans of soda, or to pry open your smart phone to retrieve the battery for charging (which is what I did to split my right thumbnail this morning), but you really should rely on tools to avoid doing unnecessary damage.

All it takes to have healthy, attractive nails is a little protection and some added strength. If you are careful, then it won't be long before you see lush, strong nails resisting brittleness and cracking.
