Getting Your Kindergartner Ready For School

By: Aydan Corkern

Sigh. It seemed like it was only yesterday when your little kiddo was born. It seemed like only yesterday when he took his first steps or when he used the "big boy" toilet for the first time. But now the time has come for your not-so-little-one-anymore to grow up a little and become a little more independent because he is starting kindergarten! How do you get him ready for the big day and the challenges that await him?

It's important that your child get enough interaction with other kids his age so that he is not too shy and so he can learn how to be cooperative with them. It is also essential that he has a basic understanding of numbers and the alphabet, so it is encouraged that you have your child attend preschool as soon as possible. While one year of preschool is usually good, sometimes an extra year of preschool is better, especially if your child needs an extra push with learning. When your child hits 3 or 4, sign them up for preschool!

Having them go to preschool will most likely ensure that they will not have separation anxiety from you. After all, your child has been so accustomed to being around you constantly and not having you around, even for just a few hours, is enough to send them into a frenzy. Your child might worry that you won't come back, so it is important to give reassuring, comforting words.

Getting ready for kindergarten involves more than just buying all of the supplies on the list that the teacher handed out to you. It means getting involved, taking an active role, and participating in your child's life so that he can progress and gain the confidence and skills necessary to become an independent, productive child.

It might be difficult to spend time with your child when you have a busy schedule, but it is crucial for your child and for your relationship with him to spend even a few minutes with him everyday. Read a bedtime story, brush your teeth together, or have him help you with any chores. Cooking is a great way for the whole family to get involved and you can give your little one tasks that he can accomplish with ease. Set aside some time after dinner to play a quick game. Whatever it is you and your child decide, give him your undivided attention for that period of time.

Again, school supplies will only get your child so far. It is the time that you spend with him that will nurture, nourish, and cultivate his very being into a happy kindergartner.
