Hanes Erie Goes to Four Day Week to Save Energy

By: Thomas Hanes

In another striking move to help their employees stretch the dollars spent on gas for their cars, Hanes Erie, Inc. will change manufacturing/production working hours to four days per week and ten hours per day (7:00 am to 5:30 pm). This will eliminate driving to the plant on Fridays for the majority of the plant production workers. The gasoline saved will be substantial and over the course of one year it could be thousands of gallons of saved fuel.

In an unofficial poll taken to see how this change would be accepted by the employees, over 95% were in favor of it and thought that it was a wonderful idea.

In addition to helping the employees save on fuel for their cars, this move will bring more efficient daily production by eliminating start-up, shut-down and breaks that would have occurred on the fifth production day. Also, the majority of the plant personal will be able to enjoy a three day weekend every week of the year…not a bad incentive!

Everyone is excited by these new working hours which began on June 30th, 2008.

The second shift will continue to work 3:30pm to midnight and work with the first shift from 3:30pm until 5:30pm.

The office staff and the shipping/receiving department will continue to work the standard eight hour, five day work week.

With the price of gas over four dollars per gallon, this is another way to conserve energy and help the environment. And since Hanes Erie, Inc. is certified to ISO 14001:2004E, these changes fall right in line with their commitment to good Environmental Management.
