How Can Alcohol Affect Your Fitness Program

By: Dane Fletcher

I know the temptation behind grabbing a cold can of beer after a tiring workout at the gym, or just sitting on the sofa straight from the gym with a cold beer in hand. We all know the temptation of meeting up with your gym buddies in the bar during the weekend and watch a game or simply drink yourselves silly.

Whatever your motivation for combining drinking and bodybuilding, you need to be informed of the dire consequences. For every beer you take, you reduce your progress and you can even end up preserving it all together. Let me not scare you into quitting the brown bottle or the wine glass, I will however give you the facts and leave it to you to figure out why exactly you can't combine drinking and bodybuilding.

First of all, all bodybuilders know that one of the core pillars in bodybuilding is increasing in lean muscle. The best way to do this is by gaining lean weight. I'm sure your wondering what relationship is there between alcohol and fat. My answer is that there is a huge correlation. Alcohol is full of what we refer to as empty calories. This means that with every drink you take, you are literally filling your body with calories that it not only doesn't need but it won't use.

The body therefore uses nearly all its energy burning these empty calories while the ideal is to use that energy to burn fat. In short, your body will use most of its precious energy to first burn these empty calories and then use any energy left, if any to burn the fat around your belly! Testosterone is associated with aiding fat burn while alcohol on the other hand has been proven to reduce the body's testosterone levels quite significantly.

Secondly, alcohol dehydrates the body which is the last thing any bodybuilder wants. Water is crucial to your body in that it flushes out all the waste and unwanted substances from your boy whole at the same time takes part in nearly all the metabolic processes in the body. Water s also known to assist protein in its functions and I'm sure you know the importance of proteins a bit too well.

If you already have this distractive habit as part of your lifestyle, and then it's about time you got a new hobby. Before you kick alcohol completely out o your system, you can start by drinking at least 2 liters of water every time you rink. Not only does it prevent you from getting a nasty hangover, but it also helps prevent dehydration.

Also, make sure you don't drink on an empty stomach and always order water together with your drinks. If you're an alcoholic, I wonder how you've survived this long in bodybuilding! You need to get professional help, if not for the good of your own health, then for the sake of your career as a bodybuilder. But until you get over it just remember, don't drink and drive and smoking is simply a no go zone!
