How To Install Residential Solar Panels

By: Mark Tan

We all like to save money, especially on our electricity bills. One way to fight climate change and also put more change in your pocket is to install your own residential solar panels.

If you build and install sufficient solar panels, you could reduce your current energy bill by up to 80%, or supplement it altogether at times when the sun is shining. Some states allow you to sell your excess energy back to the power grid. Whilst you may not eliminate your dependency on the utility company, you will at make savings of more than $300 every month.

Every project comes with its minimal set of components and to install residential solar panels you will need to buy or build the solar panels themselves, a rechargeable 12V deep cycle battery, a DC meter and a DC input. AC appliances require the installation of an inverter. The number of panels and batteries you need depends on the number you want to install in your home and or the amount of power you require.

Installation of the solar panel is, in principle simple. The components need to be connected together. The DC meter must be connected first to the negative terminal on the battery and then the positive terminal. It is important to do them one at a time or you risk a nasty electric shock. Repeat this for the DC inlets and also for the solar panels themselves.

Inverters can be connected to the DC inlets at this point. The total wattage of all the AC equipment in the home has to be calculated to figure out the wattage that you are likely to draw from your home power system. Once your system is wired up you can install it on the roof or the side of your house where they will get the most sunlight. All you have to do then is leave the battery to charge up over a period of at least 10 hours and then you can start using your own home made energy!

It is important to figure out which part of your house gets the best sun before you start the project, make sure there are no trees or tall buildings that will obscure the sun you get. If you live in temperate countries like the UK that don't get too much sun, don't let that put you off. Solar kits sell very well in the UK, despite lack of sunshine being a national complaint. If you live in India, South Africa or anywhere with lots of sunshine, this might be a great way for you save money and fight climate change.

This is, of course a very brief overview of how the process works, but I hope it demonstrates that it is a matter of connecting components in a set order and does not need any specialist engineering skills. If you are interested in installing your own residential solar panels, the best idea would be to buy a guide to home renewable energy. There are many on the market, some better than others but they will take you through the entire process from start to finish and show you what to do.
