How to Build a Windmill

By: Alex De Mostafa

Whether one wants to put it up as an alternative way to generate electricity or merely for decorative purposes, building a windmill does take some amount of work. And yet, learning how to build a windmill is not quite as difficult as one might imagine.

A windmill is basically made up of 4 main parts; namely, the blades, the base, the tower, and the nacelle, which is the compartment responsible for the movements of the blades. When going about how to build a windmill, it is advised to purchase the blades and the nacelle rather than making them on one’s own, especially if the builder has little knowledge of the physics of wind.

This tutorial will instruct one how to build a simple 5 foot wooden windmill. The materials needed are: four 1 to 3 foot long wooden blades; four wooden planks, half an inch thick with a length of 5 feet and a width of 18 inches; a flat 18 inch square piece of plywood; 20 pound sandbags; screws; either an electric screwdriver or drill; and either a nacelle or a simple gear shaft.

The first step in how to build a windmill is to place the 20 pound sandbag on the 18 inch square piece of wood in order to make a base for the windmill. Then three of the wooden planks are screwed together into a kind of U-shaped incomplete square. This is then attached to the base in order to form the windmill’s tower, one side of which is left open to accommodate the nacelle.

Next comes the blades, which are to be assembled as per the assembly instructions provided by the manufacturer. As installing them could be dangerous, one must make certain that they take the proper safety precautions while working (the same goes for the rest of the steps in this process).

The blades are attached to the tower by means of the nacelle, again following the enclosed assembly instructions for its installation. One may also use a simple gear shaft for attaching the blades, although this won’t allow the windmill to be used to generate power. If one does intend the windmill to generate energy, it has to be connected to an energy converter in order for it to do so.

The fourth wooden plank is attached to the U-shaped planks in order to make up a complete box-shape, and thus completing the windmill tower. One may want to cover the top of the tower, and if the windmill is meant to be an ornamental piece, they might want to paint it in the color that they deem satisfactory.

At first glance, it would appear that learning how to build a windmill seems terribly technical and complicated. While it will take quite a bit of time and effort, as well as money for the parts, the steps involved are relatively easy to follow and all that hard work will pay off in the end.
