Joel Osteen Tickets - The Preacher

By: Brent Warnken

In 2007, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace criticized preacher Joel Osteen for his lack of scripture reference in his Sermons. Wallace also questioned Osteen's hesitancy to discuss sin as an integral part of life. The preacher responded by saying he is trying to teach people how to live their everyday lives, and that's how he focuses on sin.

After a 2005 appearance on Larry King Live, Osteen was criticized by the Evangelical community for not clearly affirming that Jesus Christ is the only way a person can reach Heaven. The preacher stated that only God knows a person's heart, but that as a believer in the Christian faith he believes in an intimidate relationship with Jesus Christ.

In 2006, Osteen made another appearance on Larry King Live to clarify what he said to the talk show host. He said he believes that a personal relationship with Jesus is the only way a person can reach Heaven. The preacher continued to say he chooses to focus on the goodness of God rather than sin. As for the question why doesn't he include many Bible verses in his books, the preacher answered by saying he sees himself as more of a life coach. The Evangelical Christian explained that he tries to teach Biblical principles in a simple way, by emphasizing the power of love and positive attitude.

Born Joel Scott Hayley Osteen on March 5th, 1963, the preacher is an American best-selling author and the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Huston, Texas. The Evangelical Christian can be heard in 100 countries around the world.

Joel's father, John Osteen, was a Southern Baptist pastor who founded Lakewood Church in 1959. John was able to gather 6,000 members with an active television ministry, conferences, missionary support and food support. In 1999, John died of a heart attack. On April 4th, 1987, Osteen married Victoria L. Iloff. The couple have two children, Jonathan and Alexandria.

On October 3, 1999, Joel succeeded his father as pastor of Lakewood Church. He wrote a book called, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential in 2004. By 2006, Barbara Walters named the pastor one of the year's "Ten Most Fascinating People." Former presidential candidate John McCain described Osteen as "inspirational." In October 2007, the preacher released his second book titled, Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day, which landed on the New York Times best Sellers list.

Osteen told Larry King that his new book focuses on relationships. He currently travels the nation, presenting programs in sold-out stadiums. The pastor's tour, called "A Night of Hope," expanded to several countries, including Canada, England, Northern Ireland, and Israel. In 2006, The Church Report named Osteen "Most Influential Christen in the United States." He is one of five evangelical leaders featured in the book called Holy Mavericks: Evangelical Innovators and the Spiritual Marketplace.
