Language Translators on Your Website

By: Dustin Schwerman

Here's an interesting experiment: go into whatever stats program is tracking your website and check out the breakdown of visits by country. You might be surprised to find a fairly significant variety of worldwide clicks. If those numbers are high enough, you might even be considering the need for getting your site's information translated into other languages.

Of course, unless you happen to be a master linguist, you aren't likely to be translating your entire website by hand. There are programs out there - Google has one, for example, that seems quite quick and easy to implement - that can go through your site's text and convert it to a language of your choice. These systems are ideal for dynamic translation into a number of languages, although they have their limitations. Graphics and video, for example, would not be altered. Button links, thus, would not be affected, and if your site has a lot of video content, you would need to take other steps. Of course, accuracy is also a question, but since my six or so years of Spanish classes left me with a sum total ability to politely introduce myself, excuse myself to the bathroom, and conjugate a few verbs, this is an area to which I cannot attest.

Another option is to find a professional translator to do the job. This has the advantage of being done by an actual thinking person, hopefully reducing errors that might come about from phrases that has more to do with the society than the language and syntax. The translator can also provide translations to use in your graphics, and some might be able to provide voice-over, dubbing, or captioning services for video content.

So for sites that are primarily text-based, it might be a good idea to look into translation software to make your site multi-lingual. For more visual websites, a good professional translator is the better way to expand your list of potential visitors.
