Liposuction In NY City - A Step Toward A Healthier Lifestyle

By: Alex De Mostafa

Liposuction is a safe plastic surgery procedure that has a positive impact on the mental and physical profile of the recipient. As reported in the Plastic and Reconstructive journal, more than 80% of liposuction patients are pleased with the results of their surgery and would recommend the procedure to family and friends.

According to Jeffrey Kenkel of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; "Liposuction is one of the most satisfying procedures for patients and most effective at eliminating localized fat." Kenkel went on to explain that most liposuction patients strive to maintain the positive results after surgery with healthy diet and exercise programs that reap long-term benefits. More than half of the liposuction recipients reported no weight gain after surgery and 46% actually reported long-term weight reduction.

58% of liposuction surgery recipients maintained their exercise regimen while 33% increased their workout routine and 44% converted to a healthier diet. In fact, exercise and a healthy diet are contributing factors to the liposuction recipient's positive emotional well being and physical improvement.

Liposuction is the most common plastic surgery performed in the United States. Popular areas of concentration include arms, neck, thigh, abdomen, buttocks and ankles.

In New York City, there are five popular forms of liposuction surgery.

- Tumescent
- Smartlipo
- Vaser LipoSelection
- Laser Lipolysis or Cool Lipo
- Power Assisted Liposuction

In advance of liposuction surgery, candidates receive an initial consultation with the surgeon. At this meeting, the patient describes the goals and defines the areas for surgery. Often, preliminary photographs are taken at this session. The surgeon may describe similar procedures. Many New York City surgeons have the computer technology to generate images of specific areas.

The importance of this initial consultation cannot be underestimated. Not only is this a time for the patient and surgeon to meet each other, but also patients should ask questions about the actual liposuction procedure. The surgeon may request blood samples and permission to review the candidate's overall medical history. In New York City, only patients in good health will receive liposuction surgery.

Liposuction is most effective when the patient has a stable health condition with relatively firm skin and when the patient has maintained a weight near the desired weight for a period of six months or so. Liposuction is especially desirable if the localized area is not responding to exercise therapy.

In most cases, liposuction surgery is an outpatient procedure. The surgery is often performed at the New York City surgeon's office or at a New York City surgical center. In cases where a large amount of fat is to be removed, an overnight stay may be recommended.

With most liposuction, the patient will receive professionally administered anesthesia. If the area to be treated is small, the anesthesia may be localized. For larger areas or procedures requiring more extensive surgery, a heavier dose of anesthesia may be necessary. In these cases, the patient may be asleep while the liposuction surgery is performed.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will use the cannula tool or laser to remove the excess fat. The length of time for the procedure is usually determined by the patient's body type and the amount of fat to be removed.

After liposuction, patients may experience some discomfort, pain, stiffness, burning or temporary numbness. In some cases, patients may notice drainage from incisions, swelling and bleeding. If drainage persists, a small tube may be used to prevent fluid buildup. If appropriate, the liposuction surgeon may prescribe mild pain medication.

Typically, patients are placed in a support garment that protects the affected area. This garment must be worn until the surgeon authorized removal. Patients may opt for gentle massage therapy for the area during the eight- week recovery period. Following these simple steps will assure the desired results that have made New York City one of the world's top liposuction surgery centers.
