List of Small Dog Breeds

By: Alex De Mostafa

Toy dogs are great for people who frequently travel and who would like to take their pets with them. Small dogs are also perfect for those who are not looking for functional pets. These dogs are great as companions yet they are not reliable as guide dogs. Small dogs may also serve as guard dogs.

The Origin of Toy Dogs

It is believed that small dogs were bred from the hunting dogs and working dogs. These bigger dogs were bred down so that it will be more convenient for the owners to take their dogs with them. Unlike working dogs, smaller dogs do not have to form heavy tasks. They serve as status symbols and guard dogs.

Small Dogs and the Kennel Clubs

The American Kennel Club, The Kennel Club, the Australian National Kennel Council, the Canadian Kennel Club and the New Zealand Kennel Club have a group that they designate for toy dogs or smaller dogs. Although these clubs have the toy group, they do not necessarily classify the same breed into this group.

Another kennel club in the United States, the United Kennel Club does not have the same classification. They classify the smaller dogs along with the same type of larger dogs under the Companion Dog category. In 2008, the American Kennel Club is considering changing the name of the Toy Group into Companion Group to imply that dogs are not toys.

Characteristics of Toy Dogs

One of the common characteristics of dogs that are classified as toys is their small size. There are some cases, though, that a breed is classified under the group even though it has larger varieties. It is also usually understood that toy dogs are slow moving and do not need a lot of exercise. There are exceptions to this rule, though. These include papillons, maltese and Italian greyhounds.

Common Toy Breeds

Shih Tzu

This dog is one of the most common toy dogs. The breed is believed to have originated in Tibet. This dog has a long coat and a small and flat nose. Its soft coat reaches the floor and is prone to tangles.

Chihuahua

Rightfully belonging to the toy group, the Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world. It was named after a city in Mexico. Its height ranges between six and ten inches and it may have a long coat or a smooth coat.

Pug

The pug is known for its wrinkled face and a muscular body. It is one of the largest toy dogs, which could weigh up to eight kilograms.

Dogs are great companions. Whether you have a large or a small dog, proper care should be given depending on the special needs of the breed.
