List of URL Extensions

A domain name extension, commonly known as URL extension, is the last part of the domain name that denotes a geographical region or a business type. Some URL extension includes more than just a top-level domain; it also contains a country second level domain which precedes the top-level domain (example: .gov.ph).

The following is the list of available URL extensions.

Meaning of commonly used URL extensions.

1. .com represents the word "commercial" and is the most widely used extension in the world.
2. .net represents the word "network" and is most commonly used by Internet service providers, Web-hosting companies or other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the Internet.
3. .org represents the word "organization" and is primarily used by non-profits groups or trade associations.
4. .biz is used for small business Web sites.
5. .mobi (short for "mobile") is reserved for Web sites built for easy viewing on mobile devices.
6. .us is for American Web sites. It has the largest amount of available names in inventory.
7. .fm is the country code for Federated States of Micronesia, but is commonly used for FM radio.
8. .am is the country code for Armenia, but commonly used for AM radio.
9. .us.com is an alternate domain for the United States
10. .uk.com is an alternate domain for the United Kingdom
11. .eu.com is an alternate domain for the European Union
12. .de.com is an alternate domain for Germany

Some URL extensions have certain restrictions on who can register them. Sponsored top-level domains such as .gov are sponsored by private agencies or organization that enforces rules restricting the eligibility the top level domain.
