Mens Fashion Tips - Mens Back to School Style

By: Hendrik Pohl

For most, going back to school is seen as a dreaded time, something to be avoided, if it can be helped. As a fashionable man, however, you could also see the start of the school year as yet another chance to remake your look and reinvent yourself, at least in terms of style. It's a new crowd, a new year and a new chance to make your fashionable mark.

Dress Your Age
A lot of guys at university, as you've probably noticed, prefer to maintain a uniform of a tee, jeans and a hoodie for most days of the semester. While there's nothing wrong with this kind of outfit per se, you'll agree that it's more suited to a high school student than to a guy taking on the bigger world of higher education.

Start by ditching the baggy jeans and the I-went-to-bed-in-this tee; give yourself the very college-appropriate look of great-fitting jeans or chinos paired with a polo or shirt. The key to making the collegiate look work is fit: as long as your clothes fit you well instead of sagging and bagging all over the place, you'll look more professorial than pubescent. Baggy loose fit jeans and oversized shirts are the stuff of high school undergrads.

Why limit yourself to ubiquitous hoodie when there's a very wide outerwear spectrum for you to explore? Blazers, for example, give you warmth and a very respectable air at the same time. On warmer days, a slightly lighter cardigan gives the right amount of cover without sacrificing style. Colder days could call for a mackintosh or pea coat to keep you looking cool in the cold weather.

Classics for College
As much as you might have liked big blaring graphics back in high school, it's not a very appropriate look for the college campus. Now that you're getting older, your style should be going in a classic and more mature direction.

First of all, learn to wear a shirt. Just because it has long sleeves and a stiff collar doesn't mean that it's restricted for corporate drones only. Start with a polo shirt, if the idea of a collar irks you so much. A shirt, however, is the ultimate college style choice. Wear the classic way with a tie for your presentation in the morning, unbutton it for lunch with classmates and then roll up the sleeves when you're out with your date in the evening.

Expand your wardrobe beyond the bounds of mere denim. Slacks, khakis and chinos are very stylish choices that are most often ignored by the younger crowd. At your age, not only are these other styles of pant much more appropriate, but they also exude a maturity that denim doesn't. And with a good enough fit, they'll even show off your bod to the eligible ladies on campus.

Unless you're wearing a graphic tee (which should be a rare occasion), you'll find that prints are fairly unnecessary once you hit university. A fashion statement for your age is very different from what the younger kids would consider 'cool'. You'll find that a simple but elegant look will get you much farther than some gaudy outfit from high school.

Subtlety is the key word for the kind of style you should be adopting at this point. Ties, collared shirts and non-denim pants are all things you should begin acquiring in your wardrobe. No, it's not an expression of age or toning down. It's simply practice for the subtler, higher stakes world of the workplace and real life in general.
