Modern Garden Designs

The process of designing and creation of plans for garden layout is very much simplified by the use of computer aided programs. Garden design for a modern environment is usually kept pristine and elegant and blends well with the building and its environment. The design can be carried into the building or visa versa. It has a special aura and has the ability to transport you into another hi tech sphere of the modern world.

Whatever the need, the basics of planning and designing are the same. Purpose and utility can be compared to the interior of the building. Therefore in a garden the hallway is compared to the driveway, a sitting room, the lawn and rose garden, kitchen and dinning room- vegetable garden, herbarium, recreation - swimming pool, utility room the garden shed etc. with all this in mind the landscape architect plans and designs a garden to blend and complement the building and serve its purpose.

It is safe to say that there is evidence of horticultural practices that dates back to nearly 4000 years of human civilization. Down the centuries Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, Spain, Italy, Japan, China and in more recent times in other places around the world. In Sri Lanka there are well preserved leisure gardens dating back to over 2500 years.

The first step is in selecting your goal and to know what you want. You want to make the outdoors livable or you want to make a statement.

You may be faced with limitations such as space. Make the best of it. A sculptured design will complement a very modern building with the use of topiaries. Textures and new materials are in use today with innovative planning and design a lot can be achieved.

The elements of garden design incorporates hard landscaping and this encompasses the planning and building of drives, paths, paved patios, water features, decking, walls and a host of other features. Soft landscaping covers the laying out of lawns, garden plants and trees. Maintenance is also very essential in shaping the garden to achieve the final picture you want created and is an extension of soft landscaping.

Location of the garden can greatly influence the designing of the garden. Have in mind that a good garden design, well planned and constructed which complements the building will at once increase the value of the property. Therefore give consideration to how you want to use the garden and the way the garden will connect and blend with other spaces, structures and buildings.

Frame your garden – just as a good frame will compliment a picture so will the boundary and backdrop to your garden. Decorative wall textures and finishes, hedges, decorative fencing that is peep-proof are some suggestions.

Surfacing of open spaces can be either smooth or textured. An expanse of a well manicured lawn is good example of a smooth texture that sets off a garden very well. Other textures can be achieved with gravel, colored bark chips, pebbles, and paving.

Planting design will depend on whether your garden takes the shape of a formal garden or an informal natural garden.

Lighting in the garden enhances the garden at night and can take many forms such as safety lighting, up lighting or down lighting and fitted to give the desired effect. Lighting can also be focused on a feature in the garden for greater effect.

Whatever shape your garden takes, whether it follows the lines of a meditative Zen garden, a miniature Japanese garden with flowing water features containing colorful Koi carp and garden ornaments or just a style of your own, be sure that it will always be a place to take away the stresses of the day.
