Saving Energy Through Double Glazings

By: Lawrence White

Are you tired of paying more for your fuel bills every winter? Looking for something that can help you cut costs and at the same time provide you the same amount of warmth in your house? If you are looking for more information on how to go about it, then you are on the right page.

In any house, one of the main entry points for cold air is through the windows. That's what windows are supposed to do, provide air circulation and ventilation to the house. Normally, we use glass windows in our homes, which are not enough to keep the cold air outside. Hence, the temperature inside grows a little colder and your home heating fuel bills eventually gets bigger.

Now, as the old saying goes, 'necessity is the mother of invention'. More and more people are tired of paying more for fuel bills and are looking at science to come out with some clever solutions to this situation. Well, the answer is 'insulated glass', or double glazing or double glazed units. Now what exactly is this double glazing and how does it help you cut down your heating fuel bills?

Insulated glass is multiple glass panes assembled into one unit. They are produced in such a way that they maximise thermal insulating properties of a gas that is contained in the space formed by the unit, so it can provide clear vision even at low temperatures. The basic idea behind this double glazing is that it lowers the heat loss, so you feel warm and cozy inside, which indirectly cuts down your household fuel bills.

Some of the double glazing glass uses Low-E glass (low-emissivity glass), which allows solar radiation to pass into a room. This means the coating helps to reduce heat loss but allows the room to be warmed by direct sunlight. This kind of glass is normally coated with metal, which reflects thermal radiation and absorbs solar radiation. These glass panes are separated by a spacer, which is normally made up of fiberglass, to increase the overall thermal performance and to prevent condensation between panes when the temperature falls below the dew point.

However, the thickness of the space between the panes determines the insulating efficiency of double glazing units. Hence, to maximise the insulation effect, inert gases like argon are filled in between the panes, which has a thermal conductivity of 67 percent that of air.

The NHIC (National Home Improvement Council) also recommends the use of insulation because of the impact it has on energy consumption and on lowering heat loss through windows. Apart from cutting down your home heating fuel bills, insulated glass also helps you to keep out harmful UV radiation and external noise.

Hence, if your house is on a busy street, you can use double glazing units to create a calm environment at home. Undoubtedly, it's popularity is soaring and more and more people are switching to this new way of insulation.
