Step By Step Moving Process

By: William Gold

Moving is one of life's rite of passages, whether you are a career military man or woman changing duty stations again or a college freshman living away from home for the first time. No matter how many times you might have done it, and even if you haven't, changing residences marks one chapter of your life from another because so much of our self-identity is bound up with our sense of home and community, not to mention the personal possessions in such places which reflect our tastes and values.

Yet eventually all of us wind up moving at some point, and it is precisely the very personal nature of moving that can make it highly stressful even for the most confident and organized of people. Here is a quick review, then, to go through and consider so as to help you make the most of it all!

The first thing to do is to determine what possessions are coming along with you and what must be left behind and thrown out. It is important at this initial point not to get bogged down in memory lane. Holding a yard sale is a great idea to help you get rid of unwanted stuff while making a little money, too. It can also be a final chance to see your neighbors if not meet them for the first time! In this vein, it may also be helpful to host a farewell party for the psychological closure. And as for the unwanted stuff, they can also be donated to local charities, particularly any left over from the yard sale. Be sure to get official receipts if you do donate: they will help lower your taxes for the year!

The next step is to arrange for utility cut-off dates, as well as set up a forwarding address with your local post office. After all, you will probably appreciate uninterrupted mail delivery, and you certainly won't want to pay for gas and electricity if you don't use them! The third item on your moving list is to make sure you vacate the old residence on good terms, particularly if you are a tenant and have been renting. Carefully make sure that the place has no damage or repair any that there are so as not to forfeit the security deposit! And even if you were the owner but had sold the property, it is courteous and, believe it or not, psychologically helpful for you, to leave behind a clean place for the new inhabitants.

Those are the first three basic steps associated with any move. They are not necessarily the most obvious, but they do assure you get things off to a good and hassle-free start! Congratulations and good luck.
