Take Your Photography And Photo Books Into The Night

By: Dominic Donaldson

Recently there have been loads of reports of meteors that have been spotted across the world; night photography is often something some people may not consider doing. But with the right advice and help, night photographs might end up giving you some of the best pictures you have ever taken. Here in this article we look at some top tips and ideas for night photography so that you can comprise a whole set of photo books on all of the stunning night images you have captured.

An essential item that you will need for night time photography is a tripod, although places such as town centres will have some lighting the exposures will be a few minutes longer. Even with your camera on a tripod you should use your self timer to remove any possible movement when the shutter button is pressed. You may need to take some extra batteries a long for this too; the longer exposure will drain the power much quicker than usual. It will be worth it afterwards though when you have some stunning images that will look incredible in professional portfolios such as photo books.

A slow ISO should be selected on your camera when photographing at night, as this will help minimise any noise in the photographs. Take photographs in twilight as some night photos will truly be really dark; it is great to get some contrast in your photos. Choosing the time when the sun is slowly setting you can get some amazing colours from the sky, you have to be quick though as this time of the day does not last for very long.

You might find that to make your images exciting you want to create some movement. A good example is the head lights on a car, in order to capture these you will need to change to a slower shutter speed. To get stunning trails of traffic you need an exposure of around ten seconds to get a really good effect. If you are taking photography at college or university then presenting your night images in photo books is a great way to explain how you achieved different effects. Text can usually be added to photo books and will make your images look extremely professional.

So the next time you decide you want to take some photographs but are stuck for ideas then why not take your camera outside. We often forget how much artificial light is clearer during the evening and how interesting this is to look at in photographs. Great landscapes in cities such as London always have lots of amazing photo opportunities.
