The Main Types of Metal Working Equipment

By: Jack Landry

There are many different types of metal working equipment. Metal working equipment serves the structural steel industry as it strives to manipulate metal in an more efficient and effective way.

Producers of this equipment have clients ranging from small and medium size enterprises, fabricating shops, to large construction companies. The most common types of metal working equipment include hydraulic press brakes, pinch rolls, plate shears, bending machines, tube benders and plate rolls.

All of these different types of equipment work together to increase the productivity and output of the industry. All of these machines have literally revolutionized the use of metal working equipment and made the industry's workload faster and easier.

There are various features of each of these different types of equipment that assist in molding and shaping metal. The first type of metal working equipment is hydraulic press brakes.

A press brake is a machine, used for industrial purposes, mainly for the bending of sheet metal products. Hydraulics deals with mechanical properties of liquids, which means that liquids are used to power this particular type of press brake.

Speeds of the press brakes are adjustable and controllable making bending sheet metal products easier and safer. The second type is pinch rolls.

Pinch rolls are a mechanism used for measuring line loads at the pinch rolls of a continuous-casting machine. Pinch rolls are supported by load cells which are then linked to a recorder.

The load cells measure weight at pinch rolls, the weight varies inversely as the line load enables the operator to control the force and prevent overloading the pinch rolls. The third type of metal working equipment is plate shears.

Shears are used to provide smooth and quiet operation while cutting or manufacturing metal parts. There are two different types of shears; plate shears and rod shears.

Creating plates are the most common form of shearing. Shearing is a metalworking process which cuts stock without the formation of chips and without the use of burning or melting.

Basically, if the cutting blades are straight the process is called shearing; if the cutting blades are curved then its only shearing-type operations. The fourth type of metal working equipment is bending machines.

A bending machine is a metalworking machine that allows and simplifies the bending of sheet metal. Ornamental and job shops tend to highly favor this type of machine, as well as industries where pipe, tube, and aluminum extrusion bending is required.

There are a few types of brakes including a cornice brake and a box-and-pan brake. These brakes are part of a bending machine.

A cornice brake only allows for simple bends and creases, while a box-and-pan brake also allows the formation of box and pan shapes. Bending machines help to make bending metal easier and faster in the metal industry.

The fifth type of metal working equipment is a pipe and tube bender. Similar to the bending machine, this piece of metal working equipment bends pipe, tube, and other solid materials.

Pipe bending machines can either be human powered, hydraulic assisted or hydraulic motor driven. The process of tube bending starts with placing a tube into the pipe bender and clamping it between two parts of the machine.

The two parts are the clamping block and the forming die. The sixth type of metal working equipment is a plate roll.

Plate rolls shape a sheet of metal in a curved shape. Plate rolls are achieved through a cold forming process.

The cold forming process is when metal is deformed by passing through rollers at a temperature below its recrystallization temperature. Plate or steel metal is formed into cylindrical shapes by a combination of three rolls arranged in a pyramid formation.

Two of the rolls are left in a fixed position, and the third is adjustable to suit the desired bend and thickness. Manufacturers sell a lot of different types of metal working equipment.

When using any machine the operator must be aware of safety precautions and wear the correct protection to keep safe from any harm or accidents that may occur. They should also be trained in which machine does and how it works.

By taking these steps to eliminate mistakes the industry can be safer and accidents can be kept to a minimum. All of these different types of metal working equipment help to make the industry more efficient and effective.

There are other types of metal working equipment sold by manufacturers. They are great in helping the industry grow and develop and making constructing metal easier for individuals and companies.
