The Ultimate Pick-Me-Ups For Someone Who Is Feeling Down

By: Art Gib

So, we have all been there--you have a close friend or associated or even a family member that is just feeling down and out. Perhaps they lost their job, had a death in the family, or they are having struggles in their marriage--it could be almost anything. But they just don't feel or act like themselves.

Sometimes in these situations, it's your job to step in and be a listening ear and/or give advice when it's asked for. But on many occasions, they would rather that you took a step back and allowed them to keep their problems to themselves.

But that's doesn't mean there is nothing you can do for them. I think that everyone wants to know that they have people in their corner, so there are myriad ways you can do just that.

First of all, let them know you are thinking of them. Drop a note in their mailbox that says something to the effect of, "I know you're going through a hard time. I'll be here for you if you need me. You're in my thoughts." It can be as simple as that! Or, if that is a little too old-fashioned for you, try an e-card instead.

Get them flowers! Yes, even they're a man. I know people tend to construe this as a romantic gesture, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to be whatever you make it. Again, include a little note that explains your intentions and your thoughts--that you just want to provide some comfort and let this person know they are important to you.

Bringing a meal to someone who is dealing with a difficult circumstance can also relieve burdens while not being too intrusive. You will want to clear it with them and their family first and try to ascertain any food allergies or convenient times to come by, but most people are very grateful for the offer.

This is a great gesture not just for someone dealing with hard times, but for virtually anyone in a situation where they would appreciate some extra help. In my community, we often do it for new mothers--people who have a new baby in the house always appreciate a helping hand!

Even if dinner isn't the solution, dessert often can be! Make brownies or whip up a batch of fudge and bring it to them at work or at home. I know you're busy, too, but fudge is one of the easiest yet most decadent desserts you can make, and there are tons of recipes all over the web that can take advantage of. Everyone has time for fudge!

Of course, you need to judge what would be best by your individual situation, but in my experience, some of these methods are no-fail at helping someone cheer up and appreciate that they have a friend like you, despite their hard times.
