Tips For Installing A New Front Door

By: Lawrence White

If you have decided to install a door, then you have accomplished the most difficult part of the task. Many people are scared at the idea of installing their door without the help of an outsider. Now you have to figure out how you can install your front door. There are three kinds of door that you can install

a) Front Door
b) Bedroom and Bathroom Doors
c) Combo Doors

Here are some tips for installing a front door, which will ease the process of changing your front door. Before you start replacing the doors make sure you have all the required tools handy. You need to measure the size of the existing door if the new door you intend to put up is just a replacement of the existing door. However, if you plan to change the dimensions of the front door make sure you make a note of the width, height and the jamb of the new door. You will also need a razor blade, which will help you to score around the door trim.

This will help the wall paint to remain intact when the interior trim of the existing door is removed. To remove the interior trim you will require a crowbar and a hammer as this will prevent the walls from getting damaged. Once you have removed the interior trim you can easily remove the exterior trim. Now use a drill gun remove the screws from the existing door, which will help you remove the slab of the existing door. Once the slab is removed, use the hammer and the crowbar to remove the interior of the existing front door.

Now clean the dirt in the area in which you are working. Once the area is clean, apply silicone beads on the jamb to prevent water from entering the new threshold. Now use the square, level, shims plumb to snug the new door, which is placed into the opening. Make sure you leave no space between the frame and the interior trim of the new door. Before you secure the doors with the help of screws, make sure there is no friction when the doors are opened and closed.

At times, you may have to make changes in the wall to accommodate the front door. I suggest you make changes in the front wall only if it is an absolute necessity. When choosing the angles of the front door make sure these angles match the angle design of other doors of your house. When deciding on the width of the trim it will be prudent that you take the measure of at least 3/8 of an inch if the thickness of the door is 0.75 inches. The least of your trim should be at least 1/8 of an inch more than the distance of floor and the inside top of the front door frame. Now fix the legs with the help of a nail gun and a compressor.

When fixing the outside trim make sure you use the bottom of the front door frame for measurement instead of the floor. Make sure you wait for a few days to allow silicone to dry before you can paint your new front door.
