Tips To Cutting The Cost Of Minibus Insurance

By: Eric Token

A minibus has a variety of uses. With its extra capacity and/or storage space, it can carry more passengers and more luggage than a smaller vehicle, whilst making it much more affordable than a full-size bus when a vehicle that large isn't necessarily needed. This makes a minibus a popular choice for schools, families, taxi services, charities and many other organisations both as a purchase and as a rental.

One of the greatest costs in having a minibus, though, is purchasing minibus insurance. The need for insurance is increasingly important with the use of a minibus, as there are risks associated with them that would not be associated with smaller vehicles, particularly with the increased amount of passenger space available. If you aren't careful, you can end up paying a very high amount for your insurance policy.

Here are some tips you can use to help reduce the amount you pay for insurance:

1. Drive safely. Driving safely and avoiding accidents can help you build your no claims bonus, allowing you to save a significant amount of money in the long-term. Also avoid speeding, as drivers with more than one speeding conviction can see their premiums increase up to 25%.

2. Know what you need. Paying for cover that you don't need can be a huge cost that you don't need, therefore do away with any optional extras which are of no use to you as these will increase the cost of the policy and are not a cost effective or sensible way of buying insurance.

3. Limit the number of drivers. Reducing the number of drivers on your insurance policy will save you money. It is also cheaper in the long term to hire extra drivers with temporary cover than insuring them for the entire year, which is useful if the minibus is only used for special events.

4. Pay yearly. Paying for your minibus insurance upfront can save you on interest charges that would incur by paying monthly.

5. Increase security. Installing extra security in the vehicle and keeping it in a safe location can lower your premiums.

6. Limit driver age. Having younger drivers on your minibus policy can be more expensive, as younger drivers are a higher risk to insure than those over 25 years. It is also worth mentioning to the insurers if you have women drivers as women are typically offered lower premiums than men as they are considered to be less of a risk (as long as they are over 25 years old!)

7. Consult a specialist. Someone fluent in the ways of insurance can help you lower your current costs and recommend plans and companies to you to give you the best policy available.

Minibus insurance can prove to be very expensive, especially if you don't know what is a good price and what you can do to lower it. By following the tips mentioned above, it is possible to lower your insurance costs to a reasonable level that is both affordable and sensible without having to compromise on being adequately covered.
