Trick out the House for Halloween with Plush Animals

By: Iveta Volagna

Are you the consummate holiday decorator? Do you make a unique statement with your decor at Halloween? My nephew showed us all that you can innovate on the spookiest of occasions. Each Halloween, my sister and a neighbor stage a friendly competition over who can convert their own homes into the coolest haunted house. This past year the winner was my nephew who decorated my sister’s house in a distinctive and original way.

My nephew created an Addams Family house crossed with Castle Dracula. He hung plastic bats in each of the rooms, including the chandelier in the living room. He also used fake spider webs (sold in party supply shops) to spin webs in every spare corner and through the banisters of the staircase. Then he added paper skeletons in odd poses in even odder places. One skeleton seemed to be taking a stroll into my sister‘s bedroom and others peered out of corners, the basement stairs, and even the TV!. The final touch was a ghoulish paper skeleton grinning at each visitor to the front door from behind the living room sofa.

The kitchen was also transformed into a witch’s lair. He put skillfully carved Jack O'Lanterns around the room with tea lights for a ghostly glow. The witch herself, a paper cutout, was hung next to the mop, which was decorated to resemble a witch‘s broom! There was a bubbling pot placed on the stove top to simulate a witch’s cauldron. He even got permission to borrow my niece’s stuffed black cat to complete the look. The overall effect was that of a witch cooking up a creepy potion in her kitchen.

But my favorite theme was the one he came up with for my niece‘s bedroom. She has a wonderful collection of stuffed animals, with plush toys all over her room. She has stuffed cats, dogs, rabbits, monkeys, teddy bears and more in her menagerie. Instead of hiding all of her cute pals, my nephew incorporated them into his theme. He used white handkerchiefs with holes for eyes to transform some of the plush animals into phantoms and ghosts. He hung them from the ceiling with straps to make them seem to fly about the room. My niece has a stuffed raccoon with its own natural mask that he made more villainous with a plastic knife and a bike chain. He remade several of the animals into vampires with the addition of fake fangs. The best was a teddy bear in a black cape with sharp white teeth made from paper to transform it into a menacing bloodsucker!

My nephew won the haunted house competition hands down with a little creativity and ingenuity. I can‘t wait to see if he can outdo himself next year! Who knows what he has in store for my niece’s teddy bears, who may become zombies, aliens, or whatever else he can imagine. There are lots of ways to get creative with what you already have to create an awesome Halloween sanctuary. So have some fun, get creative, and make you own haunted mansion!
