Urinary Problems in Cats - How to Handle This Common Cat Illness

By: Kate Rieger

Urinary problems in cats can be a painful and recurring problem. Cats with weakened immune systems, such as those that are already ill or elderly, are at a greater risk for urinary issues. Although there are other causes, bacteria is often to blame for cat bladder problems.

Animals that are overweight or that have long hair tend to be less able to clean the feces from around their genitals and this can predispose them to bladder infections. In many cases, urinary problems in cats can be greatly reduced, or avoided entirely with preventative care.

It is essential that you treat any urinary problems your cat experiences. Left untreated, urinary problems in cats can cause severe pain, weight loss, and house soiling. In the event that the bladder infection spreads to the kidneys, it can result in severe illness or even death. An untreated UTI can also lead to bladder stones and crystals in the urine.

One of the simplest and most effective home remedies for urinary problems in cats is pure cranberry juice. Don't get juice that has additives since this can contribute to the problem. Cranberry juice can help eliminate the bacteria that are causing the infection for cats just as it does in humans.

Now don't just slap down a cup of cranberry juice and expect your cat to lap it up.This isn't going to happen. You need to get a small, needle-free syringe and draw up about a half teaspoon into the syringe. Then get your cat into your best pill-giving hold and gently squirt the cranberry into her mouth.

Since you are going to all that work for the cranberry effect, consider adding a homeopathic remedy into the cranberry juice. These are tiny beads of plant and herb extracts that promote urinary health in your cat. Let them dissolve in the cranberry juice before you give it to your cat. Simple, but powerful stuff to help your cat get over his cat bladder problems or feline UTI.

Now don't stop at the cranberry. You should also consider your cat's water source. Tap water that has chemicals in it that may not be appealing to your cat and so it may not drink as much as it needs. This can cause urine to thicken and slow down.

Your cat won't eliminate all of the urine from the bladder and this will encourage more bacterial growth. Make sure that your cat has access to clean, pure water at all times. You can't make him drink it but making it available when he wants it may help prevent urinary problems.

Most commercial pet foods have additives that can cause digestive problems and weaken the immune system. There are alternatives that can be time consuming and expensive, but these are the best ways to prevent your cat from getting recurring UTI's.

There are numerous foods on the market that are designed for this purpose, some available in the store while other must be purchased from the vet. You can also make up a home made diet for your cat by using one of the many formulas on the Internet. You can make large amounts of the food and freeze it to make it more convenient for you.

Make sure your cat gets plenty of fresh water and a squirt of cranberry juice fortified with homeopathic remedy and you will see a vast improvement in your cat's health.
