What To Look For In a Wedding Photographer

By: Art Gib

Flowers? Check! Food for the reception? Check! Photographer? Photographer?? Wedding Photographer?!?!

There is plenty to take care of for any wedding, but finding a quality photographer to capture the event is something you simply don't want to forget. Most of your memories of you'll special day will be reflected in the precious pictures he or she snaps, whether it's the ring bearer picking his nose, Uncle Ralph's crazy toast, or just a tender moment of you dancing with your new beloved. And because wedding photos can be so critical, finding the highest quality photographer to cover your special day can be a pivotal decision in the wedding plans. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you shop between photographers.

Thanks to digital photos and do-all cameras, almost anyone with a good eye and quality equipment can start their own photography business. While this means your chances of snagging a good deal are better, it also becomes harder to find a fully-trained, skilled photographers. When you contact a potential photographer, ask to see not just their "best of" album but their most recent wedding shoots instead. This will not only give you an idea of their typical work but also their style and approach to wedding pictures.

You should also decide early on if you have a preferred "shot list" or if you're comfortable turning the reins over to the photographer completely. Depending on your preference, you'll want to find out if the photographer has their own shot list and how flexible they are with your suggestions. While any photographer looking for your business will offer to be flexible, try to get a sense of how much they like to receive feedback in their shots to judge if you would work well with that photographer.

Also, make sure the person you sit down with is the actual photographer who'll be working your wedding. Some big photography companies will contract out their work to freelance photographers or will assign their jobs to different photographers within the company. Make sure you are discussing your options with the person who'll be there at your big day.

Thanks to the Internet, it is also possible to see many examples of a photographer's work through their website. While this is a nice way to quickly narrow down your options, don't base your decision solely on somebody's website. After you've put together a short list, meet with each one of those companies to see more examples and to discuss face-to-face what you have in mind.

With these things in mind, finding the appropriate photographer for your wedding will be much easier and simpler. That way, when that big moment finally arrives, you won't have to worry about the pictures and concentrate on the happiest day of the rest of your life.
