What Type Of Fishing Rod Is Right For You?

By: Art Gib

Summer time is a natural time to think about fishing in the local lake, reservoir, or river; but if you are an avid angler, you know that great fishing is to be had all year long and all over the world! Being equipped with the right kind of rod for the type of fishing you are doing is, of course, one of the most important keys to a successful day on the water. Here is a little bit more about determining what type of fishing rod is right for you.

Fishing rods are usually made from one of five different materials: graphite, bamboo, fiberglass, steel, or wood. The material you choose depends on the type of fish you are after and the setting. For example, you wouldn't want to use a bamboo rod for deep-sea fishing, but it is considered to be the ultimate for fly fishermen. Similarly, there is no need to use a thick graphite pole that is ideal for landing heavy marlin at your local fishing hole. If you have any doubts at all, it is best to consult with an outfitter who can help you get just what you need.

Rods measure from 4 feet long all the way up to 16. Most all-purpose rods average about 6 feet long, however, and are appropriate for most adults in most angling situations. Most game fish can be landed using short, strong rods; however, if you are going after aggressive fish such as pike, muskies, or South American peacock bass, you'll need to use a thicker, longer one. Why? If you've ever fought an aggressive fish, you know that they'll break a thin rod clean through as soon as he starts to struggle.

Graphite rods are preferred by experienced fishermen because they are lightweight and easily maneuverable, yet they are incredibly strong. If you plan on fishing regularly, it is probably worth the investment to go for graphite. It should feel like an extension of your own arm and be comfortable in the palm of your hand.

The flexibility of the tip is important because it is an integral part of the "hooking" process. This is called the "action" and it, along with the strength of the rod and the toughness of the line, are what determines success in most circumstances. You want to find just the right balance between rod responsiveness and functionality.

It can be a little tricky at first to figure out what will work best for you and in what conditions. Most experienced anglers own an arsenal of rods that they can choose from depending on where they will be going fishing! If you are not sure, consult with an angling expert who will know just how to fix you up right.
