What's So Special About 2009?

Objectively speaking, January 1st, 2008 may be just like any other day. But if viewed in the proper light, it can be made into something much more meaningful and profound. It is the time of year that people resolve to improve themselves and their lives. If you treat the new year properly, you can use it as the motivation you need to turn yourself around and make 2008 your best year ever.

The main thing you should focus on is trying new things. Many people would agree that this is the best way to grow yourself and become a better person overall. When you follow the same schedule from day to day, your life becomes predictable and lacking in excitement. Your life will be more interesting and enjoyable if you break the regular pattern as often as you can. Every day you should find something new to do - if it leads to a bizarre situation, count yourself lucky.

Another thing that will almost certainly lead to self-improvement is making an effort to learn something new. The possibilities are infinite. The most important decision you need to make is how you will learn whatever it is you want to learn. That depends mostly on your personality and knowledge acquisition methods. Some people learn much more efficiently by reading a book, while some prefer something more interactive such as a college course. No matter how you do it, you should constantly be learning something, to keep your brain sharp. Listen to language lessons on your computer. Read a book about art. Take a kickboxing class. Learn anything that you've always been interested in.

The final way to make 2009 your best year ever is to focus on correcting any flaws you perceive in yourself. There are two ways this can happen - you may realize that it's not actually a flaw and forget about it, or you can determine that it is a flaw and fix it. Make a list of things that you want to change about yourself. Then, check them off the list one by one. Make a conscious effort to change yourself. Remember the theory of cognitive dissonance and use it to your advantage. If you act a certain way, your thought processes will begin to adjust to fit the way you're acting.

In order to have a good year, you need to make an active effort to do so. You can't simply decide to do a few things at the beginning of the year, then forget about it right away as so many people do. Constantly remind yourself of the lifestyle changes you're trying to make.
