Why The Scrappage Scheme Isn't The Answer To Everything

By: Tony Hill

When the Scrappage Scheme was first announced everyone thought it was a fantastic idea. In many ways it was because many car dealers had been struggling so much during the world-wide recession. The aim was therefore to get motorists into car showrooms up and down the country - and in effect kick-start the automotive market once more.

Figures from the first few months of the scheme have already suggested that the scheme has had the desired effect as new car sales for many manufacturers have shot up and injected some much needed funds into the industry.

However, the Scrappage scheme is only really good if you have the money to splash on a new car in the first place. Also, because of the criteria you also need to have a car that is ten years old and over - and that has been registered in your name for over a year, so that rules out the chance of buying an old car just to get 2,000 pounds off a brand new one.

Another down point that has been suggested by many is that car dealerships have increased the price of new models slightly to compensate for the loss they will suffer in the Scrappage Scheme.

I am currently looking to replace my car and have looked into the scheme, however I have still found that buying a used car would be the best buy. You can get some good used cars for a decent price, and I have always been a bit sceptical of buying brand new anyway. I've always been told that as soon as you drive a new car out of the forecourt they lose value - so buying a new car would only be worth it is you didn't mind losing money when it comes to re-selling it.

When buying a used car you just need to be careful where you buy it from and who you buy it from. Make sure you thoroughly check the car and it's essential that you take it on a test-drive - this will enable you to get a good feel of the car and hopefully you should notice if there is anything majorly wrong with it. I saw a second hand car for sale in Scotland that was only one year old - but it had done 17,000 miles and had already lost 4,000 pounds in value. It just goes to show - if you keep an eye out there really are some good bargains to be had.
