Your Different Crane Hire Options

By: Dominic Donaldson

Having been used since as far back as Ancient Greece, cranes have now become one of the first things people think about when undergoing major construction work. Crane hire can be difficult; you have to consider whether you need a fixed or mobile crane, how high it needs to reach and how heavy the load is. One thing people neglect to give much thought to is the type of hire that they require.

In most companies, there are two options for crane hire; it is important to understand difference between the choices as your obligation as the hirer differs in each situation. The first option that most companies offer is hiring on a crane only basis. In this case, you are responsible for ensuring that there is compliance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). You should arrange full insurance cover for the lifting operation which includes loss or damage to the lifted goods, loss of damage of the crane and any lost revenue. You also need to find a qualified and capable person to plan and manage the lifting.

There are a whole host of duties that this appointed person must attend to, first and foremost, they need to study the lift you are planning and select the correct crane then they must select the correct tools needed for the lift. They will need to plan a safe system of work and tell these to the supervisor, slinger and signaller that they will appoint themselves. This person will also need to check the credentials of the crane hire company you are using and check any relevant certification. With this kind of hiring, the company is only contracted to supply a correctly maintained, certified and tested crane.

Alternatively there is contract hiring; this is the more advisable method as the hire company will take full control of the lift and provide the appointed person to manage the lift, the person will be fully qualified. In this, full insurance cover will also be provided by the company. Most comprehensive contract lifting services will include; on site inspections so they can select the correct crane, risk assessment and management, road closures if necessary and transportation of the crane.

If you do choose to hire just the crane rather than go for contract hiring, it is essential that you make sure that the person you appoint to manage the procedure. If not used or assembled correctly, cranes can be dangerous and can lead to fatalities as well as damage to property. Crane hire is something that does require a lot of thought, but if you do not know a lot about construction yourself, then contract hiring is your best option.
