How to Optimize your Computer to Improve Performance
Preventive maintenance is the key to computers running efficiently and avoiding major meltdowns.
The following tips for Microsoft Windows systems can help improve your computer's performance. These tasks use utilities provided within the Windows operating systems to aid you in achieving the best system performance. Cleaning your registry is the single most important part of having a smooth running system but you need more guidance than offered in this article. I included a link for you in this article.
Now what can you do yourself and how often?
Once a week- Clean up disk errors
Over time, the errors –such as program crashes or power outages --can slow your computer. There is a Disk Check program that can check and clean any errors on your computer and keep it running smoothly.
You will find this under Start>all programs>accessories>system tools
Check Disk can take several hours to check and clean errors on your computer.
Once a week - Remove temporary files
Looking at Web pages and working on files in programs, such as Microsoft Word can cause your computer to store temporary files. These files will slow your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup screen to rid your computer of these files.

Once a month -Rearrange your data
Keeping your files segmented close together can save time and room on your hard drive. A computer defaults its storage to the largest space available at the time. This results in a fragmented file which causes slower performance. This is because your computer must now search for all of the file's parts. This rearrangement can be done with the Disk Defragmenter.

Make Internet Explorer run faster
This IE can often come to a CRAWL! Honestly I have switched over to Mozillar Firefox which is available for FREE. After switching I learned many tech savvy internet users are actually utilizing Mozilla.
But if you want to stick it out with IE try these tips:
Reduce the size of your Web page history. By going to Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options. In the Internet Options dialog box, in the History section, find the Days to keep pages in history: box. Type "1" in this box, as pictured in the image below. Click OK.
Reduce the number of days to keep pages in history.
Don't save encrypted Web pages
Install antivirus programs
Computer viruses and spyware is almost impossible to avoid. To get rid of it and keep most of it out you will need to install an antivirus software program.
